Alright, listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about them best Jets players, you know, the fellas who really made that team somethin’. I ain’t no fancy expert or nothin’, just tellin’ it like it is, the way I see it.

First off, gotta talk about that Joe Namath fella. He was somethin’ else, let me tell ya. Swagger like nobody’s business. Folks say he guaranteed that Super Bowl win, and darned if he didn’t go out and do it! That Super Bowl III, that was a big deal. He played quarterback, you know, the guy who throws the ball. And boy, could he throw! He played for a good while too, from ’65 to ’76. He’s the kinda guy everyone remembers, even if they weren’t around back then.
Now, there were other good players too, not just Joe. This Curtis Martin fella, he was a runner, a real workhorse. He’d just keep poundin’ that ball, gainin’ yards little by little. Dependable, that’s what he was. You knew he’d get ya those yards when you needed ’em. He played a long time too, and he’s up there with the best runners, not just on the Jets, but everywhere.
- Running back was his thing, and he was good at it.
- Always seemed to be movin’ forward, never givin’ up.
- Quiet fella, didn’t talk much, just did his job.
Then there’s Don Maynard. A receiver, that’s what he was. Joe Namath threw him a lot of them balls, and he’d catch ’em! Fast as a jackrabbit, that one. They say he could outrun just about anyone. He and Joe, they were a pair, I tell ya. Made for some excitin’ games.
Let’s not forget about the defense neither. “Sack Exchange” they called ’em. Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko and them boys. They were tough! Always gettin’ to the other quarterback, knockin’ him down. Scary fellas, they were. You wouldn’t wanna mess with them.
Wayne Chrebet, now there was a fighter. Little fella, but tough as nails. They called him “Mr. Jet” cause he always gave it his all. He wasn’t the biggest or the fastest, but he had heart. That’s what mattered.
And of course, gotta mention Darrelle Revis. They called him “Revis Island” cause nobody could catch a ball on him. He was a cornerback, the guy who stops the other team’s receivers. Smooth, real smooth. He could just shut down a whole side of the field. A real talent, that one.

The Jets, they ain’t always been the best team, that’s for sure. They’ve had their ups and downs, more downs than ups if you ask me. But these fellas, they were somethin’ special. They gave it their all, every game. They made the Jets worth watchin’.
The Jets have been around for a long time, 60 seasons they say. And they’ve won a championship, that Super Bowl III I was talkin’ about. But mostly, they’ve been losin’. More losses than wins, that’s the truth. But even when they were losin’, these players, they still stood out. They were the bright spots in a lotta dark seasons.
So there ya have it. My take on the best Jets players. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, just an old woman who’s seen a lot of football. But these fellas, they were somethin’ else. They made the Jets somethin’ to be proud of, even when things weren’t so good. They’re the ones folks still talk about, and that’s gotta count for somethin’. The Hall of Fame, they got some of these fellas in there too, twenty of ’em they say. That just shows ya, they were the real deal.
Jets football, it’s been a part of my life for a long time. I’ve seen ’em good and I’ve seen ’em bad. But these players, they always gave me somethin’ to cheer about. They’re the reason I still watch, even when they’re losin’. They’re the best, plain and simple.
And there are lots more good players, over the years, lots of them. Too many to name ‘em all. But these are the ones that stick out in my mind. The ones that made a real difference.
