So, I was messing around the other day, trying to figure out who the best center forwards of all time are. It’s a fun little project I decided to take on, just to see what I could come up with.

I started by, you know, just thinking about it. Who comes to mind when you think of a great center forward? Names like Pelé, Gerd Müller, these guys just pop into your head, right?
Then I dove into the internet. I was reading all sorts of articles, looking at stats, watching old game footage – you name it. It’s amazing how much stuff is out there once you start digging. I found out a ton about some players I knew, and even more about players I’d only heard about in passing.
I started making a list. Just jotting down names, trying to rank them. It was tough, man. So many incredible players. I mean, how do you even begin to compare someone like Marco van Basten, whose career was cut short but was so amazing, to someone like Zlatan Ibrahimović, who played forever and scored a crazy number of goals?
- Marco van Basten – Seriously, this guy was something else. His goals were insane, like, acrobatic and powerful. I read somewhere he’s considered one of the most complete strikers ever.
- Zlatan Ibrahimović – Played until he was 41, can you believe it? And scored over 580 goals! That’s just nuts. Only a few guys have scored more.
I spent hours on this, tweaking the list, moving names around. It felt like every time I thought I had it figured out, I’d remember another player or read another article that made me rethink everything.
I was talking about it to my friends who love football, too. It is funny how passionate people can get about this stuff! Everyone’s got their favorites, their reasons why this guy is better than that guy. It is a part of what makes it fun.
The Idea of a “Striker”
And I also started thinking about what makes a great center forward, you know? I came across this idea that a striker isn’t just about setting up goals, but being the one to finish them. They’re always on the edge, trying not to be offside, watching the ball and the defenders like a hawk. It’s a tough job.
Eventually, I came up with a list of 15. It’s not perfect, and I’m sure people will disagree, but it’s my take on it. It is the result of hours of research and thinking. This was a tough project but I have finished that.
It was a fun little exercise, though. Made me appreciate these players even more. And it’s always fun to dive deep into something you’re passionate about, right?
