Alright, let’s talk about this soccer stuff, you know, the OL Reign and the Portland Thorns. I ain’t no expert, but I’ll tell ya what I know. These two teams, they been goin’ at it for a while now, like, since this NWSL thing started, whatever that is. They call it a rivalry, like them Hatfields and McCoys, but with more kickin’ and less shootin’.

The Early Days
Way back when, I heard tell of a match, must’ve been 2017 or somethin’, and this gal, Fishlock, she scored a goal real quick. Like, bam! Before you could say “biscuits and gravy.” That was the fastest goal anyone had ever seen between these two teams. Guess that set the tone, you know? These gals ain’t messin’ around.
Now, they play for somethin’ called the Cascadia Cup. Sounds fancy, huh? It’s a big deal for them, I reckon. This year, they’re playin’ on September 16th. Mark your calendars, if you care about such things. I’ll probably be busy watchin’ the chickens, but you folks do what you please.
- 2017: Jess Fishlock scores the fastest goal ever in this rivalry. Fastest I ever saw anyone move was my old rooster chasin’ a hen.
- September 16th: The big game for the Cascadia Cup. Hope they got good snacks.
The Thorns and the Reign, Who are They?
From what I gather, the Thorns, they got a whole bunch of folks followin’ them. Someone told me there’s like, almost 4,000 people on some internet thing just talkin’ about them. They call themselves the “ORiGiNAL RAiN” or somethin’. Sounds like a lot of fuss over a game, if you ask me. They’re always on that road, playin’ here and there. Reminds me of my grandson, always on the go.
And this Reign team, they’re from Seattle, I think. They’re always on the road too. Seems like nobody wants to stay home these days. Must be somethin’ in the water. One time, they played, and this Klingenberg girl, she was talkin’ about how they played and how some of their players were missin’. Probably off doin’ somethin’ more important, like visitin’ their grandmas.

Watchin’ the Game (or not)
They say you can watch the game on TV or somethin’. I ain’t got time for that. Too much work to do. But if you’re into that sort of thing, you can probably find it. They got all sorts of contraptions these days for watchin’ stuff. Me? I’ll stick to watchin’ the birds and the bees. That’s entertainment enough for me.
It’s Just a Game, Ya Know?
Now, all this talk about soccer and rivalries, it’s a lot to take in. At the end of the day, it’s just a game. People runnin’ around, kickin’ a ball. Nothin’ more, nothin’ less. They get all worked up, cheerin’ and hollerin’, but it ain’t gonna change the price of eggs, you know what I mean?
So, what’s the big deal?
These teams been playin’ for a while and from what I hear there’s some drama. Someone’s always gettin’ upset about something, some rule change or some player not playin’ or somethin’. Makes me tired just thinkin’ about it. Back in my day we played marbles and we liked it. Simple as that.

But I guess if it makes folks happy, then let ‘em have it. Just don’t be expectin’ me to understand it all. I got better things to do, like makin’ sure the cows don’t get out and that the garden ain’t full of weeds. That’s real work, not runnin’ around after a ball.
The Bottom Line
So, there you have it. My take on this whole OL Reign versus Portland Thorns thing. It’s a rivalry, they play for a cup, and folks get all excited about it. More power to ‘em, I say. Me? I’ll stick to my quiet life, where the biggest excitement is watchin’ the sun go down and listenin’ to the crickets sing. That’s my kind of entertainment. But you young folks, you do what you please.
More About the Game
So this game, it’s important, they tell me. A real battle between two tough teams. It’s like watchin’ two roosters fightin’ over the same hen, only with more rules and less feathers flyin’. They got strategies and plays and all sorts of things I can’t even begin to understand. And they got their fans, cheerin’ and booin’ and makin’ a whole lotta noise. It’s a spectacle, that’s for sure.
But when the game is over, what do you got? Just a bunch of tired players and a whole lotta empty popcorn buckets. Life goes on, you know? The sun still rises, the chickens still need feedin’, and the world keeps on turnin’. So don’t get too caught up in it all, that’s what I say. It is just a game after all.

Final Words
Now I am done talkin’ about this here soccer stuff. You young folks have fun with it. Me, I’m gonna go make some tea and sit on the porch. Maybe listen to the radio, if I can find a good station. And if those soccer gals come by, I’ll offer ’em some cookies. They’re probably hungry after all that runnin’ around. But don’t expect me to know who won, alright?
