Well, let me tell you about this fella, Jimmy Stewart, the race car driver. Now, this ain’t the movie star Jimmy, no sir. This one was a real speed demon, always zippin’ around those tracks like a chicken with its head cut off.

They say he was from Scotland, this Jimmy Stewart. Born a long time ago, in 1931, and went to meet his maker in 2008. That’s a good long life, but not long enough for a speedster like him. He was always itchin’ to get behind the wheel, you know? Like a horse waitin’ for the gate to open. Race car driving is what he was good at. He was always racing something with wheels, since he was a little boy.
He only did that big-time Formula One race one time. Just once! Can you believe it? But that didn’t matter none. He was a big shot in the sports car world. They say he was one of the biggest names in the whole darn world of motorsports, whatever that is. I reckon it means he was pretty good at what he did, goin’ real fast and all.
Jimmy Stewart, they called him. Died at 76. That’s a ripe old age. But when you’re a racer, it feels like you’re always chasin’ time, tryin’ to beat the clock. He sure did leave his mark, though. He got the race cars as his life. They still talk about him, you know? They got all these fancy statistics and things. Circuits and teams and whatnot. I don’t understand half of it, but it sounds important.
- He was born way back in ’31. March 6th.
- Died in ’08, on January 3rd.
- Did that Formula One thing just once.
- But he was a big deal in the sports car racin’ world.
Now, there’s another Stewart fella, Jackie Stewart. This one, he was a real big shot. Won all sorts of championships, they say. He was a champion many times. People say he was one of the best ever. He did a lot of things to make the race safe. He was smart, that Jackie. He was also real good at talkin’ to people. He made the racin’ more popular. That’s what they say, anyway. He got people to watch the race. He was famous, you know? People like him.
This Jackie fella, he won some more of them championships later on. Then he quit racin’ when he was still young. Only 34! That ain’t old at all. They say it was because of his friend dyin’ in a race. That must have been awful. Death is never easy, especially when it’s sudden like that. But he still did a lot of things after the race. He started a race car team. I guess once you got racin’ in your blood, you can’t never get it out.
He even did some shootin’, this Jackie fella. Shot clay pigeons, whatever those are. Must be some kind of sport. They say he was good at that, too. Won some championships for that, as well. Seems like he was good at everything he tried. He was a good shooter, too. He must have been a busy fella, always doin’ somethin’.

But back to Jimmy Stewart. The first one. He was a good racer, too, even if he wasn’t as famous as Jackie. They both loved racin’, that’s for sure. It takes a certain kind of person to do that, I reckon. Someone who ain’t afraid of speed. Someone who likes to live on the edge. It takes a brave man to drive that fast, I’ll tell you what. It’s dangerous, you know? But they loved it, those two. They just couldn’t get enough of it.
I remember when I was a little girl, we didn’t have race cars like they do now. We had horses. And let me tell you, a fast horse is somethin’ else. You feel like you’re flyin’. I reckon it’s the same feelin’ those racers get when they’re goin’ a hundred miles an hour. It’s a thrill, that’s for sure.
So, this Jimmy Stewart, he was a good one. A real racer. They don’t make ’em like that anymore, I don’t think. Too much technology now, too many rules. Back then, it was just a man and his machine. And the open road. That’s all you needed. A fast car is a good thing. You can go anywhere with a good car. That’s what Jimmy thought, I bet.
Well, I reckon that’s about all I know about this Jimmy Stewart fella. He was a good racer, a good man. And that’s all that matters in the end, ain’t it? Being good at what you do, and being a good person. That’s what people remember. And they sure do remember Jimmy Stewart, the race car driver. He was one of a kind, that’s for sure. He was a good man.
