Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea about white running backs in the NFL, and let me tell you, it’s been a trip. I started out just kinda curious, you know? Like, why don’t we see more white dudes tearing it up as running backs?

So, first thing I did was hit up the internet, just poking around to see what people were saying. I found some articles and stuff talking about stereotypes, you know, how folks think white athletes are…well, you know. Some folks online even talked about biases. And how there are stereotypes that impact them. That’s when I first started to think I was really onto something.
Then, I started digging into the history books. I found out about this guy John Riggins, who they called “The Diesel.” This dude was a beast back in the 70s and 80s! That really started to give me hope. He is one of the greatest running backs in NFL history, regardless of race. So, that made me think, maybe it’s not all about, you know, what people assume.
I also read something about some other guy named Jim Brown, this guy played from 1957-1965, I’m not too familiar with him, but he was mentioned a lot.
But then, I started thinking about the practical side of things. I mean, being a running back in the NFL is rough, right? These guys get beat up. So, I looked into how long these guys typically last. Turns out, not very long. Makes sense, I guess. Teams probably don’t want to bet the farm on a guy who might get injured, right?
Then there was the whole thing about how the game has changed. It’s all about passing now, and these “committee backfields” where they split carries between a bunch of guys. So, maybe it’s just not as big of a deal to have that one star running back anymore. I guess that makes sense too.
- Started with a simple question.
- Looked at what people were saying online.
- Dug into history and found some cool examples.
- Considered the practical, physical side of the job.
- Thought about how the game has changed.
So, yeah, that’s where I’m at with this whole white running back thing. It’s way more complicated than I thought it would be. I don’t have all the answers, but it’s been a fun ride figuring it all out. I guess the big takeaway is that there’s a lot of stuff going on, from old-school ideas to how the game is played today. This whole experience has been crazy, to say the least. But, I’m really glad that I did it.
