This here story’s about them famous Houston Rockets players, you know, the basketball fellas. They sure got some good ones. My old man used to watch ’em on the television all the time. Shoutin’ and hollerin’ at the screen like he was right there in the game. Good times, good times.
Hakeem Olajuwon, the Best One
First one I gotta mention, that Hakeem Olajuwon. Heard folks call him “The Dream”. He was somethin’ else, that one. Sixty-one years old now, can you believe it? Still, back in his day, he was the best darn player on the Houston Rockets. Everybody said so. He got more points than anyone, 26,511, I heard. He was like a cat, jumpin’ and movin’ all over the court.
They say he’s in that, whatchamacallit, Hall of Fame thing. Must be pretty special to get in there. And he was on that NBA 75th Anniversary Team too. Sounds fancy, don’t it? That Hakeem, he was all over them record books. Points, steals, rebounds, blocks, he did it all. Best player ever, if you ask me. He’s a Nigerian-American, they say, but he played right here in Houston.
Yao Ming, That Tall Fella
Then there’s that Yao Ming fella. Tallest man I ever did see! He’s from China, born in Shanghai. He played for the Rockets too, and folks sure did love him. He was an All-Star, whatever that means. Must mean he was real good, huh? He was born in 1980. So that makes him… well, never you mind how old he is. He’s a good player, that’s all that matters.
My grandson, he had a poster of Yao Ming on his wall. Stood right next to him in the picture and Yao was still a head taller. He could probably touch the clouds. When he played, the whole crowd would go wild. They loved him.
Some Other Good Players
- James Harden – Heard he was pretty good, too.
- Moses Malone – They say he was a legend.
- Clyde Drexler – Another one that got lots of cheers.
- Ralph Sampson – That name rings a bell.
These Houston Rockets, they had some championship teams. Winners, they were. The whole city would get excited when they played. Parades and everything when they won. It was a big deal, I tell ya. They are the best team ever. Everyone loves the Houston Rockets. They are just so good.
Remembering the Good Ol’ Days

It was a long time ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. People were so happy. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearin’ about the Houston Rockets.
This Yao Ming, he was a fan favorite. He was so tall. He made all the other players look like little kids. But he was a gentle giant, they say. He did a lot for the community. He was a good man, that Yao Ming. He was a very good player. I remember my grandson always used to talk about him. He was his favorite player, I think.
