They say 48 of ’em gonna be playin’ singles. That’s a lot, ain’t it? 38 just got in straight away, I guess cause they’re the best or somethin’. The rest probably had to fight their way in, play some extra matches, you know? Like tryin’ to get the last piece of pie at the church supper.
Why Folks Watch This Thing
- They say it’s excitin’. I don’t know, watchin’ people hit a ball back and forth don’t seem that excitin’ to me. But folks like different things.
- They say you can see some good plays. Like, fancy shots and stuff. I guess that’s alright.
- And they say it’s important, this tournament. Guess it matters for somethin’, points or money or somethin’. These young folks, they care about that stuff.

One minute it’s winter, the next it’s spring, and then it’s a whole new batch of flowers bloomin’. Same with these tennis gals, I reckon.
Gettin’ Ready for the Show
So, they’re gettin’ ready now, these players. Practicin’ their serves and their backhands, or whatever they call ’em. Runnin’ around, gettin’ in shape. And the folks in Charleston, they’re gettin’ ready too. Cleanin’ up the courts, sellin’ the tickets, gettin’ the food ready. It’s a whole to-do, this tennis thing. A big production. Like a play, but with racquets instead of words.

The best women players in the country, maybe even the world, all in one place, hittin’ balls and tryin’ to win. Sounds like a battle, don’t it? But a polite one, I guess. No fisticuffs, just tennis.
