Hey guys, today I wanna talk about a topic that’s been on my mind lately: famous football players from the 1920s. It all started when I stumbled upon an old photo album at my grandma’s place. There were these sepia-toned pictures of football players, and I got curious.

So, I began digging. First thing I did was hit up the internet. I typed in “famous football players in the 1920s” and started reading. Turns out, the 1920s were a big deal for football. It was when college football really took off and became this huge thing in America, even bigger than baseball, which was the so-called “national pastime.”
I found out that the National Football League (NFL) actually started in 1920. Back then, it was called the American Professional Football Association (APFA), and it only had ten teams from four states. Can you believe that? It changed its name to the NFL in 1922. I thought, wow, this is some serious history!
Next, I tried to find out about specific players. One name that kept popping up was Red Grange. Apparently, this guy was a big deal in college football, playing for the University of Illinois. Later on, he joined the Chicago Bears. I thought, “This guy must have been something else to be mentioned so much.”
- Red Grange: This guy was massive in the college football scene.
- George Halas: I discovered that this guy was not only a great player but also one of the folks who helped make the NFL what it is today.
I also looked into some international players. I read about a guy named Hctor Scarone, who was a big part of Uruguay’s success in international football. It was cool to see how football was not just an American thing but was making waves in other countries too.
Then, I found out that in the 1920s, between 1920 and 1929, the Detroit Wolverines had the best record, which was 7-2-1. It made me think about how different the game must have been back then, with fewer teams and probably a totally different style of play.
My Thoughts
It’s fascinating to see how much football has evolved since the 1920s. These guys were pioneers, playing in a time when the sport was just starting to become what it is today. Reading about them made me appreciate the history of the game and how it has shaped the sport we know and love now.

It’s also interesting to think about how World War II later impacted football in Europe. I read that some players lost their prime years to the war, which is kind of sad when you think about it. They didn’t get to show the world what they could do because of the war. It makes you wonder what other great talents were lost during that period.
Anyway, that’s my deep dive into the famous football players of the 1920s. It was a fun little project, and I learned a lot. It just goes to show that there’s always something interesting to discover when you start digging into the past.
The things that I did were just a very brief search on the internet, I am going to continue to check the library to see if there are any other interesting players in that era. After all, the 1920s were a long time ago!
