Alright, let’s talk about them fellas from Russia playing in that basketball league, the NBA. You know, the one on TV with all them tall boys runnin’ around.

So, who are these Russian fellas in the NBA?
Well, that’s the thing. Seems like there ain’t too many of ’em around these days. I tried lookin’ around, asked my grandson, he’s always fiddlin’ with that phone, but even he couldn’t find much. Said somethin’ about “no players found” currently. Can you believe it? A big ol’ country like Russia, and not a single fella playin’ ball in America right now.
But, it wasn’t always like this, you see. Way back when, there were a few. My memory ain’t what it used to be, but I remember hearin’ about a fella named Kirilenko. Yep, Andrei Kirilenko. Folks said he was a pretty good player. Drafted real young, they say. First Russian ever to get picked in the first round, imagine that! Played for some team in Utah, the Jazz, I think. He was kinda like the pioneer, the first one to really make a name for himself.
- Andrei Kirilenko was a big deal. First Russian fella drafted early.
- Seems like there aren’t many Russians playing now.
- The internet says “no players found” currently. That’s a shame.
Why ain’t there more Russians in the NBA?
Now, that’s a question that’s got me scratchin’ my head. It ain’t like them Russians don’t know how to play ball. Maybe it’s the money, maybe them fellas over there get paid good money to play at home. Or maybe it’s just hard to get noticed, you know? America’s a big place, lots of fellas wantin’ to play in the NBA. Maybe them Russian boys just get lost in the shuffle.
What about in the past?

Like I said, Kirilenko, he was the main one I remember. But there must have been others, right? Them internet folks keep track of all sorts of things. They got lists and lists of players, where they from, how long they played, all that jazz. Says you gotta actually play in a real game to get on that list, makes sense I guess. Can’t just be sittin’ on the bench, you gotta get out there and sweat a bit.
My grandson, he told me somethin’ about how the teams pick players, somethin’ called a “draft.” And they got this thing called “salary cap” too, means they can only spend so much money on players. Sounds complicated to me. But I guess it means even if you’re a good player, you might not get a chance if the teams don’t have enough money or if they already got too many players at your position.
It ain’t just about scoring points, you know.
My grandson also told me ’bout somethin’ called “plus/minus.” Said it ain’t just about how many points you score, but how you help the team when you’re on the court. Like, if your team does better when you’re playin’, even if you ain’t scorin’ all the points, that’s a good thing. So, maybe them Russian fellas, maybe they do more than just score points. Maybe they good at defense, or passin’ the ball, or somethin’ like that.
So, what’s the deal with these Russian NBA players?
Well, seems like there ain’t many of ’em right now. But there were some good ones in the past, like that Kirilenko fella. And who knows, maybe there’ll be more in the future. This basketball thing, it changes all the time. One day you ain’t got no Russians, the next day, who knows? Maybe a whole bunch of ’em will show up and start playin’ like stars. Just gotta wait and see, I guess.

In the end, it’s all about playin’ the game. Whether you’re from Russia, America, or anywhere else, if you can play ball, you can play ball. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
