Okay, guys, let’s talk about my recent deep dive into the 1989 New York Knicks roster.
So, I got this itch to check out the 1989 New York Knicks roster. First, I started by searching, just a simple search, nothing fancy. Typed in “1989 New York Knicks roster,” and boom, a bunch of results popped up.
I skimmed through a few pages, and they all seemed to be saying pretty much the same thing. The Knicks had a decent season, 45 wins and 37 losses. Not bad, not bad.
-
Then I dug a bit deeper. I wanted the names, the players. Found a couple of sites that had the full roster.
-
The list of players who played for the Knicks in the 1989-90 NBA regular season and the playoffs. Nice.
-
We’re talking jersey numbers, positions, heights, the whole nine yards.
I started jotting down some names. You got your Patrick Ewing, Gerald Wilkins, Johnny Newman, and Charles Oakley. Seemed like a solid lineup, you know? I was writing all these names down, feeling like a real sports analyst or something.

Notable Players
-
Patrick Ewing (Center): Dude was a beast. Played 82 games, started 82. Clearly the main man.
-
Gerald Wilkins (Shooting Guard): Another key player, 82 games, 80 starts. Solid.
-
Johnny Newman (Small Forward): Played 80 games, started 69. Sounds like he was important to the team.
-
Charles Oakley (Power Forward/Center): 61 games, 61 starts. Fewer games but still started every one he played.
I also found some stuff about the 1988-89 season. Mark Jackson was the point guard then, Gerald Wilkins at shooting guard, and Johnny Newman at small forward. It seems the team had been pretty good the year before also, with Mark Jackson doing his thing. Also saw that Mark Jackson signed a multi-year deal with them in January 28. I guess that was some good news back then.
Season Recap
The season was coached by Stu Jackson. I read somewhere that he took over, and the team did pretty well under him. The 1990 season recap, they called it. I felt like I was going back in time or something, you know, like a sports history detective.

So, there you have it. I was just going through the roster, player by player, getting a feel for that 1989 Knicks team. It was a fun little project, makes you appreciate the game and the players from back in the day.
Anyway, that’s my little adventure with the 1989 New York Knicks roster. Hope you guys found it interesting!
